In Anishnaabe teaching, I learned that women are the stewards of water. July 8, 2013 has been labelled the wettest day in the history of Toronto, and flash floods put the city on hold for hours.
On June 27, 2013, I attended a movement creativity lab facilitated by Andrea Mapili. I was thinking of women's power and responsibilities on behalf of water. This is a poem I wrote at the workshop: Body of Water You are water Water is in you Women are the stewards of water You are woman Woman is in you You are the steward of water Water watches you You watch water You have body Water has body Nourish your body with water Wash your body with water The universal solvent The giver of life The abundance Water will never run out Water will always be You are water Woman will never run out Woman will always be You are woman xxxx
